Daniele Luppi & Parquet Courts ‘Talisa’ feat. Karen O Video

Italian producer Daniele Luppi and New York band Parquet Courts’ have teamed up for collaborative album, MILANO, out 27th Oct on Danger Mouse’s 30th Century Records.  The LP is inspired by mid-1980s Milan, with songs about misfits, fashionistas, outsiders and artists of the city, set against the backdrop of culture and creativity struggling to survive amidst rapid gentrification.

Ahead of MILANO‘s release comes the Diego Araujo-directed video for barnstorming lead single, Talisa featuring Yeah Yeah Yeahs vocalist Karen O.  The quirky clip is a homage to the memorable photoshoot scene in retro British-Italian film, Blow Up, whilst the song itself – written by Luppi and Karen O – is a love letter to Talisa Soto, a celebrated model, actress and close friend and muse of Gianni Versace.

Luppi says of the video:

“After my initial input and references, mostly the amazing photographer plus models scene in Antonioni’s Blow Up, I let Diego do his thing, the only caveat being I wanted to feel like we where in 1980s Milan.  Something seemingly quite out of reach since he was shooting in Quito, Ecuador – but he pulled it off: he found an Alfa Romeo collector, he created a Milanese subway sign and he stole the 25 year-old Betacams from the University of Cinema for the weekend shoot… Hopefully nobody will ever find out…”

Karen O adds:

“When Daniele brought up the indulgent Milan, 80’s fashion scene as an inspiration I immediately started scrolling through all the supermodels from back then and Talisa Soto stuck out as the best sounding name, I’ve always wanted to write a song with a woman’s name as the chorus and Talisa had that hook about it.”

MILANO is the unofficial sequel to Luppi and Danger Mouse’s 2011 album Rome, an epic ode to Italian film scores co-starring Norah Jones and Jack White.

Austin based Palo Duro releases their much-anticipated LP Ryou Cannon today via 30th Century Records. With backing support from Danger Mouse who hand picked Ryou Cannon for the label, the LP is a range of slick rock with a true indie spirit. The songs play around with a variety of scaling guitars and composition, and the lyrics dig deep into a transitional period of time in his personal life with smooth vocals and polished sounds.

Daniele Luppi, Parquet Courts: Talisa – Karen O

Listen to Daniele Luppi, Parquet Courts Talisa feat. Karen O everywhere today.
http://smarturl.it/Talisa

“Talisa” featuring Karen O is a love letter to Talisa Soto, the model and actress who was a dear friend and muse of revered designer Gianni Versace. Celebrated for her model-esque figure and striking beauty, Talisa appeared in numerous Versace ad campaigns at the height of the brand’s fabled existence. Talisa’s comely face was regularly plastered on billboards across Milan and she was a steady presence on the catwalks during Milan Fashion Week.

Says Daniele, “For Talisa’s lyrics, Karen and I dreamed up a fantasy photoshoot, a la Antonioni’s Blow Up. We imagined a scenario where Talisa is on set in a fantastical couture creation and Gianni himself is the photographer. We wanted to capture the excitement, vibrancy and fast lane life of Milano in the 80s, draped in fashion and models, as cliché as that may seem.”

The song is available on the album MILANO out 10/27.

Palo Duro – “True Fade”

Palo Duro premieres song “True Fade” on What Youth
Full LP Ryou Cannon out September 29th on 30th Century Records
Produced by Sam Cohen

Listen to “True Fade” HERE

pd

“Inspired by the late great William Onyeabor, Palo Duro’s “Darken The Glow” sounds locked into Arcade Fire’s recent groove, matching complex beats to a sky-reaching chorus.”
—KUTX/NPR Austin

“Surrounded by an ethereal haze of guitars and billowing bass lines, Michael J. Winningham’s bittersweet vocals simmer as he croons over an ’80s-era snare”
—SPIN

Austin based- Palo Duro releases newest single “True Fade,” a synth and bass heavy tune inspired by Suicide, off their forthcoming LP Ryou Cannon out September 29, on 30th Century Records (Danger Mouse). The bright pulsating sounds of “True Fade” paired with Michael Winningham’s smooth vocals is truly a treat that both Sam Cohen and Winningham have stirred up and will leave the listener in harmonious bliss.

Winningham talks about the very early stages of “True Fade” back to when he and Cohen first recorded the song.

“True Fade was one of the first songs Sam Cohen and I wrote and recorded for this record. Most of the sessions took place in a crazy studio near Wimberley, about one hour outside of Austin. They had a nice piano though and the owner used to play with Peter Rowan. We slept in a converted chapel and played intense games of tetherball after our sessions. They even had weddings out there sometimes…

I think “True Fade” has a kind of Suicide-esque pulse. The looping guitar played by a mallet and the vocal accents were ideas that began a certain willingness to let these songs go anywhere. Sam and I had a high tolerance to just let ideas emerge and try them. Dan Molad (of Lucius) mixed this song and added to the essence. Very happy to release it into the world.”

Previously known for fronting the band Gold Beach, Palo Duro’s Michael J. Winningham has created a pulsating, technicolor universe with Palo Duro. A project that began in July 2012, Michael reached out to his childhood friend, producer Sam Cohen (Kevin Morby, Benjamin Booker) to continue work on a new Gold Beach record. At 16 years old, Sam helped Michael arrange his first song at a house party in Houston TX. Fast forward many years later and this creative synergy proved to be strong—Instantly, in the studio, exciting and bold ideas emerged.  Collaboration and endless possibilities informed the arrangements between Sam, Michael, and keyboardist Carlos Orozco, and a new spirit was born. This was no longer Gold Beach.

After two years, multiple cities, a rotation of musicians and 23 songs later the music was introduced in the summer of 2016 to 30th Century Records founder Danger Mouse, and plans began to release the music.

Daniele Luppi – MILANO Album Announce

First track “Soul and Cigarette” from Daniele Luppi & Parquet Courts Available Now; Watch Video Here

Emmy nominated Italian composer, producer and artist, Daniele Luppi, will release his album MILANO on Danger Mouse’s Columbia Records imprint 30th Century Records on October 27th. MILANO is a concept album, complete with songs that are fictionalized stories about misfits, fashionistas, outcasts and junkies in mid-1980s Milan. Daniele teamed up with Parquet Courts and Yeah Yeah Yeah’s vocalist, Karen O, to help deliver his vision of an emerging youth culture struggling to be heard amidst the rapid gentrification of old Milan.

The first offering from MILANO is Daniele & Parquet Courts “Soul and Cigarette” released today. The jaunty, springy tune belies its more sinister, saddened backstory of artistic struggle.

Says Andrew Savage of Parquet Courts, “’Soul and Cigarette’ is a tribute to Alda Merini, one of Milan and Italy’s most renowned poets, yet unfortunately not as heralded internationally. I was reading her and trying to imagine Milan as she saw and experienced it. Her story is one of great suffering and her verse is often quite painful, an important juxtaposition from the cosmopolitan Milan we associate with luxury and excess”.

The video, which premiered on Pitchfork, is directed by Daniele, and based on artwork created by Andrew Savage of Parquet Courts, featuring photos from the archive of artist Peter Shire. Shire is one of the artists from the original Memphis Group art collective, whose bold works and sculptural furniture are the major visual influence for MILANO.

Regarding the video, Daniele Luppi notes, “Every picture featured in the video has a deep meaning to me. Peter took photos of the most iconic and visual striking things happening in Milan in the 1980s and seeing these images again evoked a myriad of emotions, I couldn’t believe he photographed the same places and things I experienced as a teen in the city.”

MILANO is the unofficial follow up to Luppi and Danger Mouse’s 2011 album Rome, a love letter to classic Italian film scores, with Jack White and Norah Jones. More details on MILANO including track list and pre-order, will be announced in the coming weeks; fans should watch MILANOALBUM.COM for more information.

Maybird released their first single “Keep in Line” from the EP this spring. DIY Magazine called it a “timeless psych-pop single” and also noted that it “often toes the line between pure psych-pop euphoria and a sense of frustration and restlessness, something that also feeds into the lyrics.” Their second single, “Grace” was premiered via Entertainment Weekly and they spoke with Josh Netsky of Maybird, who said: “The song is about desiring the ability to be graceful so that you can win somebody’s affection…But that somebody is kind of out there – like not in your league.”

Fusing expansive psychedelia with evocative roots rock accents, Maybird are originally from Rochester, New York. The group was formed by Josh Netsky, a singer and songwriter who released four independent albums and performed frequently on the East Coast.
